Parish Councils. The committee is responsible for all aspects of cemetery management .

Cemetery

West Hoe Cemetery

In 1982, when the Parish Churches of St Peter's, Bishop's Waltham and St Barnabas, Swanmore concluded that their burial grounds were complete, the two parish Councils established a joint burial authority and purchased land between the two villages at West Hoe for a cemetery.

Over the past twenty or so years, this land has been developed as a beautiful resting place for parishioners of Bishop's Waltham, Swanmore and the surrounding area.

The Cemetery today
It is the right of all residents of the two parishes to choose to be laid to rest at West Hoe. Parishioners and other close relatives receive preferential treatment, and the maintenance of the burial ground is subsidised from the Parish precepts of the two villages on a pro rata basis; two thirds from Bishop's Waltham and one third from Swanmore.
Interment of non parishioners is by application

Announcement
The Management Committee of West Hoe Cemetery is considering the possibility of opening a meadow burial site on land adjacent to the cemetery.

This project would only be considered a feasible option if sufficient interest is expressed by local residents and surrounding Parishes.

Interments would be in biodegradable coffins, made from materials such as wicker or hardboard, and there would be no headstones or memorials allowed. The area would be planted with meadow flowers and maintained to enhance the serenity and natural beauty of the site.

If you would care to express any interest in this idea please write to:
The Clerk to the West Hoe Management Committee,
Swanmore Parish Council Office, New Road, Swanmore
